Even though the property is less than 5 minutes’ walk from open countryside, the centre of Oloron-Sainte-Marie is only 1 km away, making schools, leisure activities and amenities all within easy reach. Oloron is the crossing point of two main rivers and is at the head of three valleys. It is renowned for its salmon and trout fishing and it retains all the charm and traditions of a typical Béarnais market town. Because of its cleanliness and its all-year-round flowers, it has recently gained its 3rd star as a “ville fleurie” .
The area’s temperate climate attracted the Victorians to the nearby university town of Pau and it became known as “La ville Anglaise” It is famous for the houses, golf course and gardens that the British built during that era, .as well as for the chateau of Henry IV, who was born there..

Outside
There are two outbuildings, both in good condition, with a total floor area of approx. 15 sq. metres. One of them, which used to be the pig sty and pigeon loft, is next to and accessible from the Gite kitchen. The other is presently used as a potting shed and is adjacent to a very large cellar (approx. 40 sq metres) with a fully insulated ceiling. This served as the mud baths in the mid-19th century and the water for the baths was supplied by one of the springs that are in the immediate area.
Gardens
Standing on a plot measuring approx. 2800 sq. metres, mature gardens comprising various species of shrubs and trees border the property on 3 sides and are a haven for many forms of wildlife. Running parallel to the garden, at about 50 metres’ distance, there is a trout stream. A spring runs through the garden of the family home, under a small bridge to an original “lavoir”, before flowing out into the trout stream. A second spring runs through the back of the back (Gite) garden, before also joining the adjacent trout stream.
